Jay Rao Lecture: "Corporate Entrepreneurship and Organizational Innovation"
Diary of the 2004 Anual Conference
ESADE Jaume de Cordelles Prizes

Today, over 1,900 managers and businessmen have attended the ESADE Alumni Association's 10th Annual Conference at Barcelona's Catalonia Congress Hall. This theme of this year's conference is Corporate Entrepreneurship (i.e. staff-generated business initiatives within the firm).

How do such initiatives emerge? What do they produce? How should they be channelled? These and other questions will be put to the experts taking part in the Conference. These include Jay Rao, Director of the Entrepreneurship Programme at Babson College (Boston), a world leader in this field.

The 10th Annual Conference of the ESADE Alumni Association will analyse a growing phenomenon: Corporate Entrepreneurship ? or business initiatives taken by staff within the firm.

The term tends to be associated with an entrepreneur who decides to carry out his or her own individual project. However, over the last few years, company projects and ideas for new products have emerged from within firms and multinationals. Here, staff comes up with an innovative idea, which they then try to get their companies to put into practice.

The phenomenon has created new business opportunities for companies, which need to respond properly to employees' proposals. Motivation, financial support, risk evaluation are all tools that are needed for implementing the right kind of Corporate Entrepreneurship policies.

After Jay Rao's speech, Eugènia Bieto, Director of ESADE's Entrepreneurship Centre will chair the debate. Those taking part are: Mario Armero, President of the Board of General Electric for Spain and Portugal; Ignasi Fonts, Vice-President and General Manager of Hewlett-Packard Inkjet Commercial Division, and Marc Duhem, Vice-President and Director of Solvay Ibérica S.A., and Regional Director for Europe, Solvay S.A.
