Diary of the 2005 Annual Conference

During the XI ESADE Alumni Association Annual Conference, held in the Catalonia Palace of Congresses, and which was attended by more than 1,500 executives, various experts pointed out the enormous business opportunities that India has to offer as a potential market for consumers and technology. Rajeev Chandrashekar, founder of  BPL Mobile and President and CEO of Jupiter Capital, stated that "India is currently in a good position to invest in infrastructures and take advantage of the consumer opportunities that it offers, thanks to its burgeoning middle class. The real opportunities are to be found in the middle class".

Other economic sectors with business potential mentioned during the conference titled "India: Innovation and Change in Motion" are the chemical industry, tourism and construction. Pavan K. Varma, Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and author of several books (for example, Keys to Understanding India in the 21st Century), indicated democracy, business, technology and the new sense of Pan-Indianism as being the four elements "that complement each other, for the first time in India, and which are making the country's transformation into a reality". Según Varma, "in addition, technology is of psychological importance. It has given Indians self-esteem, given that the country's technological success has been recognised for the first time?.

According to the experts, the changes that India is undergoing will bring about a return of intellectual potential to the country: "A lot of people will want to come back to the country, not just for sentimental reasons, but also as an opportunity for investment". Similarly, Javier Pujol, CEO of FICOSA Internacional, a company that specialises in automobile accessories with experience operating in India, pointed out that the country's only limitations are "its infrastructures and the differences between the cities and rural areas".

As part of the Annual Conference, Alfredo Sáenz, Second Vice-President and CEO of Grupo Santander and Juan José Brugera, CEO of Inmobiliaria Colonial, were awarded the ESADE Jaume de Cordelles Award, which is awarded to executives who have excelled in their professional career, in accordance with entrepreneurial values promoted by ESADE, such as innovation and corporate social responsibility.

During the Conference, an honorary ESADE Jaume de Cordelles Award was granted posthumously to Antoni M. Güell, Secretary General of ESADE and the first director of ESADE Alumni Association, who died on 8th October. Carlos Losada, Director General of ESADE, and Francisco Guarner, President of the ESADE Alumni Association, gave an emotive address in memory of Professor Güell.
