1st Forum of Trustees and Boards. An Effective Board of Trustees: People Prepared to Properly Govern Nonprofit Organisations

06/07/2011 (dd/mm/yyyy) | Barcelona

One of the most important challenges facing the third sector is to strengthen nonprofit organisations’ boards of trustees. States wield increasing control over the governance practices of NGOs. Donors, sponsors and partners have a growing interest in the proper functioning of the organisations’ decision-making organs.

It is absolutely crucial for the future of any entity that its board be competitive and capable of efficiently leading the organisation towards its objectives. Organisations with dynamic and highly involved trustees who bring a wide range of knowledge to the table are better positioned to use their resources successfully.

Alumni Giving Back aims to help improve the management of public and private social entities and support the continuing education of those responsible for their governing bodies.

At this first session of the Forum of Trustees and Boards, organised by Alumni Giving Back, Carlos Losada (PhD 03) will analyse various key issues that trustees must take into account in the fulfilment of their duties. Josep Miralles (PMD 84) will discuss the differences to which any trustee must adapt, depending on the peculiarities of the NGO in question. Josep Santacreu (DSIS 86/PMD 89), President of the Alumni Giving Back Advisory Board and Vice President of ESADE Alumni preside the session.

Carlos Losada

Carlos Losada has extensive experience on boards of trustees at organisations such as the Asepeyo Foundation and Casa Asia. At Intermón-Oxfam, in addition to serving as a trustee, he was the organisation’s vice president and a member of the board of directors. Mr. Losada is currently a trustee of the foundations of Loyola University of Andalusia, the Xavier Foundation for Tourism and the Christianity and Justice Centre. He sits on the advisory board of the Prince of Girona Foundation and chairs the Strategy Committee for the Barcelona Metropolitan Strategy Plan.

Josep Miralles

Josep Miralles was a trustee of Intermón-Oxfam for 18 years, chairing the board for 16 of those years. Mr. Miralles is Vice President of Ethics, Economics and Management at EBEN Spain. He is a trustee for various NGOs, including Migra Studium and the Arrels Foundation, and is a widely published expert in business ethics.
