Breakfast talk with José Luis Escrivá, AIReF president. Are our economies now resilient enough to deal with another cyclical downturn?
This talk organised by the ESADE Alumni Finance Club in conjunction with the Spanish Risk Management Club will feature José Luis Escrivá, president of the independent fiscal accountability authority, AIReF.

Jose Luis Escrivá will examine whether we are capacitated to make the next cyclical downturn less severe than the previous one, and whether progress has been made in the realms of finance, taxation, and the performance of markets and economic agents. He will also examine the new risk factors that have emerged in recent years.

Introducing the subject and providing an exchange of views before putting the spotlight on the audience will be David Vegara, associate professor in the ESADE department of economics, finance and accounting, with a proven track record in international organisations and the Spanish government, amongst others.

José Luis Escrivá

José Luis has been the first president of AIReF since March 2014, and also, since November 2015, president of the EU Independent Fiscal Institutions Network.

His career began at the Bank of Spain where he held several posts in the study department, prior to working in Europe where he played an active role in the process of monetary integration from 1993 onwards as an advisor of the European Monetary Institute. When monetary union was implemented, he was appointed head of the monetary policy division of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. From 2012 to 2014 he was the director for the Americas of the Bank for International Settlements in Basle.
From 2004 to 2012 he worked in the BBVA group, first as head economist and director of the study department and, from 2010 onwards, as the managing director of the public finance area.

Jose Luis holds a degree in economic science (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), winning an award for his outstanding degree, and completed post-graduate studies in economic analysis (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and in econometrics (Bank of Spain). In the course of his career, he has published many articles and research papers, mainly on financial and monetary subjects.

David Vegara

David holds a degree in economics (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) and an MSc (London School of Economics).

His proven track record includes his recent post as deputy director of the European Stability Mechanism, his time at the International Monetary Fund and in the Spanish government where he was in charge of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs for five years. He received the Young Global Leader award at the Economic Forum in Davos in 2007. He worked in the department of studies at Banco Sabadell and was the president of InterMoney, SA, for seven years.

He teaches several courses at ESADE in the areas of international finance and economics, at the Madrid campus. He is also a member of ESADEgeo.


Juan Carlos Estepa

Juan Carlos qualified in economics and business administration at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is currently the corporate risk director at Bankia and president of the Spanish Risk Management Club. Previous posts include managing director of risks at BBVA Bancomer, director of corporate risk management in the BBVA group, professor of finance and strategy management at CUNEF, director of the chairman’s office at Argentaria, and deputy managing director of Banco Exterior.
