In light of Telefónica's recent defence of pay-as-you-go Internet networks, the Vice-President of Microsoft Western Europe, Rosa Mª García, challenged the Spanish multinational to "clarify" whether suppliers or consumers will eventually foot the bill. Her appeal came during the latest Matins ESADE session, sponsored by Ernst & Young and La Vanguardia.
Ms. García criticised the proposal, calling it "a measure which doesn't even benefit the telephone companies themselves" and vouched that "the sole outcome will be a monopolised market". The Microsoft executive also warned Telefónica about the risk of ultimately providing "a cable that goes nowhere" if competitors respond with open-content networks.
With today's fierce battle raging amongst companies to become market leader in the technology sector, Rosa Mª García stressed that "it will be tough, but the winner will be the most efficient player and the one who best listens to the client".
Latest trends in technology market
The VP of Microsoft Western Europe defended the idea of the society-wide trend called "consumerisation". "All consumers are now digital, leading to greater sales of products and even industrial machinery", she explained.
This trend embraces the "democratisation of influence", made possible by the proliferation of the Internet and, in particular, social networks. This also gives rise to a revolution in business model development. "Somebody talking about your company is nothing out of the ordinary, but when a million Internet users do so and their comments remain online, this creates a new way of management thinking", said Ms. García.
The future
Rosa Mª García expressed her pessimism about the current economic situation, especially when it comes to Spain. She forecast "two to three difficult years" and predicted that "2010 will be more problematic than 2009".
Programme:
Rosa Mª García, Vice President of Consumer & Online to Microsoft Western Europe, will feature this new session of Matins ESADE titled "From Homo Sapiens to Homo Digitalis: Understanding Customers in the 21st Century".
Rosa Mª García will reflect on how the digital revolution has transformed our lives and discuss the impact of new technologies on social trends and consumption in the 21st century.
