The rise of polysemic terms such as machine learning and artificial intelligence and the wave of media attention surrounding the possibilities of managing by data are revealing the transformative impact of technology but are clouding our understanding of a myriad of sociopolitical debates around the premises, goals and unintended consequences of the spread of automation. This session aims to expand our understanding of these debates; present an overview of the main controversies; and offer some pointers on the emerging regulatory environment.
