The 2020 US election saw the victory of Joe Biden but was accompanied by an unexpected result: 11 million Americans decided to support Trump in addition to the 63 million who had already voted for him four years before. Contrary to the opinion of pundits who had tagged populism as a temporary disturbance in Western countries, the data shows that populism is here to stay. Why is that so? Can populism be understood as a new “normal” in European or American politics? Is populism a cause or a consequence? Finally, what does it say about the health of our democracies and their future?
