The ESADE Alumni Boston Chapter is holding ''The Automation Paradox: Vision, Ethics and Dystopia'' a talk by ESADE professor Jonathan Wareham on Thursday October 19th at 6.30pm.

The world of automated automobiles, the Internet of Things and smart devices is entering our lives. Although these new technologies offer wondrous convenience, services and business opportunities, their huge capacity to gather highly personal/biometric data will enable product marketing so invasive that it will fundamentally change our concepts of human free will. Although increased automation offers greater efficiency, it also threatens to dumb down our professions. This presentation will take a thought-provoking look at the world of hyper-connected and automated devices and provide a positive and yet cautionary insight into what this means for us as consumers, entrepreneurs and managers.

 

 

Jonathan Wareham

Assistant professor in the Department of Information Systems Management (ESADE). PhD in Information Systems and Master in Finance and Accounting (Copenhagen Business School). Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Comparative Literature (University of California, Berkeley). In 2003, he received the Myron T. Green Outstanding Teaching Award from Georgia State University. At ESADE, he lectures in undergraduate-level courses and the Executive MBA on economics, computer programming and technological architecture. He is a regular speaker at academic and professional conferences in Spain and abroad.

His research focuses on the intersection of information technology, economics and strategy. His studies have been published in many journals and proceedings, including MIS Quarterly and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and have been sponsored by several major companies including Microsoft.
