'Brexit. Reasons why, negotiations and impact on Catalonia' by Professor F. Xavier Mena

Catalan

November 08 OF 2016 from 07:00 PM to 09:00 PM

The ESADE Alumni Girona Club invites you to ''Brexit. Reasons why, negotiations and impact on Catalonia'', a talk by Francesc Xavier Mena, director and professor in ESADE’s Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting.

In the referendum held on 23 June 2016, the people of Britain voted to leave the European Union. The main issues during the extremely polarised campaign were the choice between national sovereignty and EU bureaucracy, immigration and the political establishment itself. The triggering of article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty by the British government, in an indefinite period, will mark the start of negotiations lasting at least two years to define the new relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom. The short-term economic impact is already making itself felt (stock exchange, pound sterling, property investments, etc). Brexit is casting a cloud of uncertainty over the UK and also the EU and global economies. In Catalonia, Brexit will have a considerable impact on trade relations and investment in a variety of industries (food, machinery, car industry, etc), and particularly British tourists and residents.
