Conference: "Brand Protection Strategies for the New Panorama of Top-Level Domains (TLDs)"

Spanish

November 17 OF 2017 from 09:00 AM to 02:30 PM

The Internet Domain Name System is currently undergoing one of the most profound changes since its inception with the introduction of more than 1200 new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Prior to 2013, the year in which the first new gTLDs were rolled out, trademark owners wishing to register an Internet domain name had to choose one of the 22 available “classic” domain extensions (e.g. brand.com, brand.net, brand.org, brand.int., brand.biz, brand.cat , etc.) or a territorial domain (e.g. brand.es).

Most of the new domain extensions currently available are open (generic), including 51 community domains, 53 geographic domains, and 92 internationalised domains (i.e. domain extensions in non-Latin characters). More than 400 of the new domain extensions that have already been assigned are branded gTLDs (e.g. .seat).

The new domain name panorama ushers in new opportunities, but it also poses new threats and challenges for trademark owners. How do we maintain or even increase brand visibility and online positioning in this vast sea of new domains? This conference will address this issue and, in particular, the possibility of applying for a branded domain, as well as discuss the various second-level domain registration strategies. It will also explain how to prevent or minimise trademark abuse by third parties and effectively combat cases of cybersquatting, which could potentially proliferate in keeping with the proliferation of available domains.

This conference, sponsored by ICANN and the CORE Association, will feature industry experts, including registry representatives, registrars and trademark owners, in a practical, dynamic and participatory format.
