John de Zulueta, president of Círculo de Empresarios, will give the next Desayunos ESADE talk: ‘The competitiveness of Spain’s economy today’.

Certain reforms to boost the competitiveness of Spain’s economy are over due. It has been stagnating for five years now according to leading international indicators. Areas such as education, pensions, the job market, the management of public entities and the fight against corruption need to be overhauled, but will the considerable parliamentary consensus needed be forthcoming?

John de Zulueta

John de Zulueta was born in Cambridge (Massachusetts) in 1947. Bachelor’s degree in contemporary history (Stanford University, California) and MBA with honours (Columbia University, New York). His long career includes particularly his years as a consultant in The Boston Consulting Group in San Francisco, his time as president and managing director of PepsiCo in Barcelona, president of Cadbury Schweppes Spain, vice president of Schweppes in southern Europe and CEO of Schweppes S.A. For 14 years he was also the CEO of the Sanitas Group (Bupa Group) in Spain, and its president from 2005 to 2009. From 2010 to 2012 he was also the president of USP Hospitals.

Zulueta has been involved in Círculo de Empresarios since 2004, and on various occasions he has been a member of its board of directors and president of its healthcare committee. He is the vice president of the Bankinter Innovation Foundation and patron of the DKV, Everis and Caser foundations, and also a board member of the Universidad Europea (Laureate Group). He has been a board member of the Asociación para el Progreso de la Dirección (APD) and the select committee to study the development of the information society in Spain. He is currently a board member of Línea Directa Aseguradora, director and partner of the consultancy Point Lobos and a senior advisor at the English consultancy Candesic.
