Sport Management Panel Discussion and Holiday Party 2016

REPORT

Around 60 alumni had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the future strategies and business models of FC Barcelona, LaLiga, NBA and MLS (Major League Soccer) at the FC Barcelona HQ in New York. Outstanding speakers from these four institutions shared their vision of sport business and market evolution perspectives during this quarter’s most significant event of the ESADE Alumni New York chapter,

Gerard Guiu (EMPA 08 / Lic&MD 02), FCB Institutional Relations Director in New York, detailed the Club’s U.S. strategy which is based on their ''More Than a Club'' slogan. This trademark is the ''biggest differentiation point'' of an institution whose foundation represents the Clubs spirit. Guiu went on to explain that the U.S. ''is a business opportunity for European clubs'' which is why FC Barcelona decided to open a representation and business office in New York three years after opening one in Hong Kong. Raul Gonzalez (former Real Madrid player and current USA Country Manager of LaLiga) agreed with Guiu that ''America is an opportunity for European football, and LaLiga in particular, to grow their businesses.'' In addition, all the ESADE New York alumni present had the opportunity of sharing with Raul Gonzalez their thoughts on a possible European league and its financial feasibility.

Emilio Garcia Duarte, NBA LatAm Marketing Director, explained that the NBA’s growth strategy outside the USA is ''to take into account the player’s nationality, whose fans from different countries  can identify with more directly.'' On the other hand, the MLS strategy is based on the ''commitment to local talent'' and the ''the quality of supply, with particular emphasis on the appeal of going to matches'', said Alfonso Mondelo, Technical Director of Major League Soccer (MLS).

The event was chaired by Jose Angel Abad, journalist at Antena 3 TV. Daniel Landaluce (Lic&MD 99), President of the ESADE Alumni New York Chapter, and board member, Albert Janer (Lic&MBA 12),  acknowledged the commitment of the four institutions for developing international youth talent and thanked FC Barcelona for kindly hosting this event at their facilities.

Amongst the 42 ESADE Alumni Chapters, spread over five continents, the ESADE Alumni New York Chapter is one of the largest ones and aims to hold plenty more meetings and events. The next event of great impact is scheduled for March
