ESADE Alumni is pleased to invite you to their forthcoming refresher series talk, 'Why are boards of administration generally ineffective', by professor Carlos Losada (Lic&MBA 81/PhD 03) of the department of general management and strategy at ESADE.

Working as a group, we will identify the main functions that a board of directors must fulfil in order to make a significant contribution to their company. We will then address the reason why such boards are not usually effective, and finally, we will put forward ways of making them run smoother.

Participants should read at least one of the following before the workshop:

Carlos Losada
PhD in Business Management (ESADE - Universitat Ramon Llull), BSc in Management and MBA (ESADE) and Degree in Law (Universitat de Barcelona).

Carlos has held several management posts in both the public and private sectors. His career began as one of the co-founders of Kernel (a start-up in the technology sector). Since 1982 he has held several technical and political posts in the Generalitat of Catalonia, the most recent one being general secretary of administration and public function. In 1997, he entered the Interamerican Development Bank in Washington DC.

He has always maintained close links with the non-profit sector and has been a board member of several non-profit entities.

His academic career began in 1986, in the ESADE department of general management and strategy. He was a professor of organisation governance, management functions, strategy and organisation, in parallel with his activities as a strategic consultant.

Most of his academic experience has taken place at ESADE, although he has also lectured at other universities and has taken part in many national and international seminars and congresses.
In 2000, he was appointed managing director of ESADE, a post which he held until 2010.

He has combined his academic activities with being a board member of several companies including particularly Gas Natural Fenosa (Spain), SFL (France) and the European company InnoEnergy (Holland). He is also a member of the advisory board of the Princess of Gerona Foundation.
Currently a professor in the ESADE department of general management and strategy; member of foundations of the Universidad Loyola Andalucía, Universidad de Deusto and IQS; and a coordinator of the UNIJES.
