ESADE Alumni is pleased to invite you to this Refresher Programme talk entitled ''EU leadership. What sort of leaders are needed and what are the chances of getting them?'' by José María de Areilza, Doctor in Juridical Sciences (Harvard University), and associated professor and Jean Monnet Chair at ESADE.
Calls are being heard increasingly for strong leadership in the European Union and the capitals of its member states in order to deal with the many challenges and crises it faces. But at other difficult times in the process of European integration, such calls for leadership were not so frequent.
This Refresher Programme talk will examine the leadership challenges experienced in different stages during the construction of Europe, and take a look at the performance of some of the heads of European institutions (Jean Monnet, Jacques Delors, Hermann Van Rumpoy) and some heads of state or government who have had a decisive impact on the integration process (Charles de Gaulle, Margaret Thatcher, Helmut Kohl, Angela Merkel).
The case study approach aims to provide examples of the different objectives and types of power exercised by these figures and determine whether there is a common denominator. It takes into account not only the personal qualities of these leaders but also the underlying structural considerations and changing institutional backdrop with a view to explaining the evolution in EU leadership and today’s leadership possibilities.

José M. de Areilza Carvajal has published extensively in the field of European Union Constitutional Law and European Union politics, in particular on institutional reform and allocation of powers between the Union and its Member States. His most recent book is entitled Law and Power in the European Union (Civitas Thomson Reuters 2014).
He has worked at Instituto de Empresa (IE), where he was Dean and founder of IE Law School, holder of the Jean Monnet-IE Chair and President of the Centre for European Studies at IE University. As Visiting Professor, he has taught at The College of Europe (Warsaw), Sciences Po (París), Kings College London Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore Faculty of Law, Universidad Católica de Portugal (Lisboa), Central European University (Budapest), University of Miami School of Law, Getulio Vargas Direito Sao Paulo, Washington and Lee University School of Law (Virginia) y William & Mary School of Law (Virginia).
Between 1996-2000 he served as Advisor on European and North American affairs to the Spanish Prime Minister. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Madrid Bar Association and is a member of the New York Bar. He writes a weekly column on international affairs for the ABC newspaper, and also sits on the publication's Board of Directors.
In 2012 he was appointed Secretary General of Aspen Institute Spain, a foundation afiliated with The Aspen Institute in the US. In 2013, he was appointed Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and Senior Research Fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute. That same year, he was granted the Jean Monnet Chair at ESADE Law School by the European Commission. He is a Trustee of the Spanish Navy Museum and of Fundación Santa María del Camino, that serves young persons with intellectual disabilities.
