Josep Oliu holds a bachelor’s degree in economics (Universidad de Barcelona) and a PhD in economics (University of Minnesota, USA). His academic career includes such posts as associate professor of economics and econometrics at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and chair of the department of economics at the Universidad de Oviedo.

From 1982 to 1983, Josep was an advisor to the World Bank and to the Ministry of the Economy of Spain’s central government. In 1983, he was the head of studies and strategy at the INI (national institute of industry) and subsequently the general manager of planning. He has also acted as an advisor to Aviaco, Elcano, Enresa and Inisel.

He joined Banco Sabadell in 1986 as the technical general secretary, was appointed CEO in 1991, and became the bank’s president in 1999.

At present, he is also the president of Exea Empresarial in addition to being their representative on the board of Puig, S.L.

Josep is also a member of the board of trustees of the Princess of Asturias Foundation and the Princess of Gerona Foundation, and a board member of the foundation for studies in applied economics, FEDEA.
